Samuel Arnold was an English composer and organist. His mother, it is said, was Princess Amelia, the second daughter of King George II. He was employed at Covent Garden where he was responsible for several pastiche operas, one of which was the popular Maid of the Mill. He bought Marylebone Gardens where he subsequently produced light comic operas. Unfortunately the criminal activities of one of his employees lost Arnold most of his money and the Gardens were sold. Arnold was then engaged as musical director at the Little Theatre in haymarket. He was also First Organist at the Chapel Royal from1783,and Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey until his death in 1802. he was buried in Westminster Abbey.
